Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and the country’s largest city. Copenhagen has plenty of interesting attractions for visitors, with heritage and more modern things to do aplenty, the city is also home to many great places to go shopping and eating to try out some of the city’s local delicacies.

Getting into Copenhagen is simple thanks to the city’s state of the art Kastrup Airport, while it is also easily accessible from Sweden’s Malmo which is situated just across the bay and connected to Copenhagen by train which goes both over a bridge and then underwater. Some of the best things to see and visit in Copenhagen include:

1. Vesterbro – one of the oldest and most traditional districts of Copenhagen, Vesterbro has changed a lot in recent times. Once considered the sleazy part of the capital which hosted cheap hotels and sex stores, the area has become a bohemian hang-out which is now home to many great cafes and cool bars playing live music. For a taste of what the cognoscenti get up to in Copenhagen it is worth taking an evening walk along the main drag, Istedgarde.

2. Norrebro – another of Copenhagen’s cool places to visit, and perhaps the busiest in terms of tourists too, Norrebro is a thriving and buzzing place to see. A multicultural area of the city which is home to galleries and museums plus many fine restaurants and bars, some of the best Copenhagen hotels available can be found in this part of town.

3. Shopping – the Danish capital is renowned throughout northern Europe as offering some of the very best shopping around. Women’s fashion is a speciality thanks to the Danish ladies liking a designer label or two, and as such there are many high-end fashion labels and boutiques to be found in downtown Copenhagen. Some of the more famous Swedish fashion names and boutiques can be had in Copenhagen too while the big American style mall Fields is always popular with visitors.

4. The Beach – being based on the coast as Copenhagen is means that there is always the chance for a swim, some fishing and a little bit of beach life assuming the weather is OK. June to August are the times when the locals head for the outdoor swimming pools in the harbours, with the name of one of the beaches perhaps invoking warmer thoughts – Vesterbro’s beach is known as ‘Copencabana’. The city also boasts a ‘real’ beach out at Charlottenlund Fort, just a short drive from the city centre, and there are also indoor swimming facilities to be had at Amager Strandpark and also the municipal baths close to the train station, DGI Byen.

5. See the Canals – more water involved in this activity as the visitor is able to enjoy the city’s canals on a simple and efficient boat tour. Tours take the traveler around some of the more famous sights and sites in the city and can be joined every 30 minutes or from the piers at Gammel Strand and Nyhavn.

6. Jens Olsen’s Clock – Copenhagen and Denmark in general are often associated with classic design and engineering, and the Jens Olsen Clock is a great example of both. Created by Olsen in 1955, the clock lets people read time in solar, local, Gregorian and Julian formats while the view from the top of the clock tower is one of the best in the whole city.
